Sentinels of Climate Change

'Ajuy' is a juvenile loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) that entered the wildlife rehabilitation center in Fuerteventura on September 25, 2023. It weighed 30.6 kg, and the length of the shell could not be measured as the caudal part was missing, possibly due to an old shark bite. The turtle was admitted because it had two hooks inside its throat with steel and nylon lines protruding from its mouth. Additionally, in the days following its admission, it became evident that it had ingested various types of plastics.

On October 31, 2023, the same satellite tracking device used for its sentinel companions, the Splash10-F-351 from Wildlife Computers, was placed on its shell. Like its predecessors, this device was funded by the Loro Parque Foundation. Consequently, we now have a new sea turtle contributing to the study of climate change in the waters of the Eastern Atlantic. Similar to its predecessors, it will enable us to track its position in the ocean over the next few months, as well as monitor the temperature at depths in the first 150 meters of the water column.

“Ajuy” es una juvenil de tortuga común o boba (Caretta caretta)  que ingreso en el centro de recuperación de fauna silvestre de  fuerteventura el 25 de septiembre de 2023. Pesaba 30,6 kg y la longitud  del caparazón no se pudo medir ya que le falta la parte caudal  posiblemente por un antiguo mordisco de un tiburón. Ingreso debido a que  tenia dos anzuelos en el interior de la garganta con sedales de acero y  naylon saliéndole por la boca, además los días posteriores a su ingreso  se hizo evidente que había ingerido plásticos de diversa índole.

El  día 31 de octubre de 2023 se le colocó sobre el caparazón el mismo  dispositivo de seguimiento satelital que a sus compañeras centinelas, el  Splash10-F-351, de Wildlife Computers y al igual que las anteriores  financiado por la Fundación Loro Parque. Teniendo así una nueva tortuga  marina estudiando el cambio climatico en las aguas del Atlantico este y  al igual que sus predecesoras nos permitirá conocer su posición en el  océano  durante los próximos meses al igual que la temperatura en  profundidad en los primeros 150 m de la columna de agua.
