Sentinels of Climate Change

ALBI

Starting her journey ...

ENGLISH

'Albi' is a subadult female loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) at 15 years of age, born on November 24, 2007, on Cofete Beach (Fuerteventura). She hatched from eggs that were translocated from the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde) and incubated on Cofete Beach (Fuerteventura) as part of the Program for Expanding the Nesting Habitat of Loggerhead Turtles in the Macaronesia (coordinated by the governments of Cape Verde and the Canary Islands).

The turtle was released on the same beach where she was born, weighing 72 kilograms and measuring 83.5 centimeters in minimum curved carapace length.

On October 5, 2023, a satellite tracking device (model Splash10-F-351, from Wildlife Computers) was attached to her carapace, funded by the Loro Parque Foundation. This makes her the newest member of the climate change sentinel turtle team, and like her predecessors, she will provide us with information about her position in the ocean over the coming months, as well as data on water temperature at depths in the first 150 meters of the water column.
